Action needed to prevent unemployment claiming another generation

3.00.00pm GMT Fri 1st Jan 2010

The governments latest unemployment figures showing youth unemployment at a record high (32 %)

is another sad milestone for young people and this government.

Neil Poole said; "slightly fewer people are claiming Jobseeker's Allowance but it will prove cold comfort to the record number of young people who are looking for work".

The Government's headline-grabbing announcements haven't even scratched the surface of the problems young people are facing in this recession. People looking for work shouldn't have to wait 6 months to get intensive support. There needs to be help from day one so that young people get the support they need to get into work.

The government must ensure high street banks release the funding needed to keep viable businesses afloat. In these difficult economic times, no stone must be left un turned in an effort to keep businesses afloat and our workforce employed.
