HIGH winds expected to head for North Lincolnshire this weekend could cause road chaos after reports of trees being blown over in the weekend gusts.

Police have warned motorists to travel carefully in potentially adverse conditions after North Lincolnshire Council's Highways department are reported to have been called out after trees were blown over onto several roads.

Butterwick Road in Messingham has been blocked twice in just five days by felled trees, with incidents on Saturday night and Tuesday morning.

A witness to Saturday night's roadblock said the situation could potentially have been much more serious.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: "The road has no speed limit and was pitch black at the time, I noticed a car with its warning lights on and two young ladies stood by the car.

"The branch was very substantial and blocked half of the road, if anyone had collided with it the damage would have been very serious."

In a separate incident on Tuesday morning, local farmer Clive Green was forced to remove a branch, which was completely blocking Butterwick Road, after being alerted to the problem by motorists and local Councillor Neil Poole.

Mr Poole said: "It's been a lucky escape that no one has been injured, the existing branches do now need inspecting to insure they are safe.

Current weather reports show winds of up to 50mph are expected to hit North Lincolnshire on Friday night and throughout Saturday.
